Plane Slate
The series Plane Slate presents a range of meeting points between the physical and digital world. Through the use of both analog and digital manipulation strategies, I distort physical depictions of the world to complicate the viewer’s perception of reality. The compression, flattening, and manipulation of imagery causes a break in human perception and prevents the viewer from instantly comprehending the resulting digital environment.
The word plane can signify a flat surface rooted in the physical world or a level of existence. Incorporating both of these definitions into the context of the work, I aim to depict a virtual plane of existence that emphasizes flat surfaces rooted in actual structure. Thus, the work sets out to blur the lines between physical and virtual reality.
The subject matter of this series included constructed landscapes and pointedly artificial structures that clearly deviate from nature. The photographs are often comprised of a monochromatic color palate, including black and white or a variation of a pared down color scheme. These formal characteristics further inform the viewer of an unnatural, plane slate. Using a variety of techniques to transition from 3-dimensions to 2-dimensions, and ultimately returning to a 3-dimensional representation on a 2-dimensional space, I create a visual record of existence through both compressed and expanded representations of physical space.
